It was in the New York Times, so it must be true! Well, maybe not. The Numbers Guy tracks down the source of the number...and tracks, and tracks, and tracks.... And finds out that it is the top end of a rather large range that is more dartboard than scientific.

The great thing about the internet is the ability to fact-check what we're given. We now have easier access to the original source documents so we can see how reliable information truly is. As my father used to say, "They find one mistake you did, everything else on that sheet is now called into question." No matter how "good" the fight is or how reprehensible the practice you're fighting, just making stuff up will hurt you in the long run.
